So you decided against staying up to 11pm BST for the Sony State of Play? Honestly, we don’t blame you, it is a tad late after all.

Thankfully for you though, we’ve pulled together a recap of everything you missed into one handy place. All those new trailers, announcements, big reveals and more. It’s all here for you to enjoy and catch up so you don’t have to feel left out.

Read on, and take a look at everything announced in Sony’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast on June 2, 2022.

Resident Evil 4

Yes, that’s right, Capcom have finally announced their not so secret remake of Resident Evil 4, which has been a confirmed release date of March 24, 2023. Once again it looks like that RE Engine is working hard because the moody European village looks absolutely incredible.

A blog post on the PlayStation website also confirmed that this isn’t a 1:1 remake of the 2005 game, but instead will be a slight “reimagining the storyline”, whilst still “keeping the essence of its direction” intact.

Either way, we’re excited to see how Capcom approach the game from a fresh perspective. In addition, whilst very little was mentioned about it, the trailer also confirmed that the Resident Evil 4 remake will also have PSVR2 content too.

Games Confirmed For PSVR 2

The next segment was a brief look at some upcoming games for PSVR 2, Sony’s next iteration of their Virtual Reality headset. We got a brief look at four games, including PSVR2 support for RE Village, No Man’s Sky as well as a first look at Walking Dead Saints & Sinners Retribution and Horizon VR: Call Of The Mountain.

Call of The Mountain looked especially impressive and giving fans of the Horizon series a meaty look at how the VR controls will work in-game and what it would look like to get up close and personal with a variety of the deadly machines from the main series.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is coming to PC

Yes that’s right. Another Sony PlayStation exclusive will be heading to PC platforms later this year in the form of Marvel’s Spiderman Remastered.

Following the success of the first game, and the Miles Morales game, Insomniac Games are currently working hard on their third entry in the series, and hopefully this latest push for the original games will bring yet more fans on board when we eventually see Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 release in 2023.

If you want you can watch the trailer below, but being honest it’s nothing you’ve not already seen before.

Stray Release Date Confirmed

The best little kitty cat game revealed a brand new trailer that has only made us even more excited to play it when the game launches on PS4 and PS5 on July 19. There’s not a whole lot to say about it for now, but essentially you play as a cat who has become separated from its family, who is trying to “untangle an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten cybercity and find the way home”. Yes, sounds a bit silly but my god we need it now.

Best of all, the game will be available for all PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plu Premium subscribers at no extra cost.

Callisto Protocol

A better look at the new game from several ex-Dead Space devs which on several occasions had me more or less shouting “NOPE” at the top of my lungs. It looks horrifying and is coming out this year, with a release date confirmed for December 2, 2022.

If you want a more direct explanation of what’s going on (since I kept looking away in disgust) here’s a direct explainer from Glen Schofield from the PlayStation blog:

“Set on Jupiter’s “dead moon” Callisto in 2320, The Callisto Protocol is the story of Jacob Lee, an inmate at Black Iron Prison who must fight for his life when a mysterious outbreak throws the moon into chaos. Prison guards and inmates are mutating into monstrous creatures called Biophage, and Jacob must battle to survive the horrors of Black Iron and uncover the dark secrets of the United Jupiter Company.”

Rollerdrome

It’s Jet Set Radio, with guns, using a similar striking visual style reminiscent of Sable.  That’s potentially a really throwaway explanation of what the game is, but it’s late so it’ll have to do. It looks pretty fun though to be fair:

Eternights

Look we’ll be honest we sort of tuned out during this trailer as we had no idea what was going on, but apparently, it’s a sort of action game mixed with a dating sim? We’ll let this section of the press release do the heavy lifting on this one:

“Eternights is a dating action game, blending a love story with adrenaline-driven combat as you make the most out of life during the apocalypse. Scavenge for supplies, explore dungeons… and go on dates! Save the world, and find love along the way.”

Street Fighter 6

Here’s the best look yet at the new Street Fighter game, which has been confirmed for release in 2023. We also get a look at another brand new character (Jamie) and our first look at Chun-Li.

That pales in comparison however as Sony and Capcom went all out to show us our first glimpse of gameplay for the new fighter, as well as a new mode called ‘World Tour’ which is being billed as “an immersive single-player story experience” set in a fairly open city you can explore. Looks neat!

There’s also something mentioned called “Battle Hub” but there’s no info on what that is for the time being. We imagine some sort of community ranking in-game tournament type thing? Either way, another welcome addition for sure.

Tunic coming to PlayStation on September 27

One of the best games of 2022 so far has now been confirmed to release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on September 27 later this year.

Xbox fans have been enjoying this game for a few months and it’s certainly in the frame for those ‘must-play’ and ‘not to be missed’ conversations.

For those who don’t know, try to picture a cutesy looking fox mixed with The Legend of Zelda. It’s somewhere in that ballpark and certainly worth playing when it drops later this Autumn. If you want to know more, check out the trailer, you won’t regret it.

Season: A letter to the future

A better look at a wonderful looking indie game seen in a State of Play last year. It’s hard to describe exactly what ‘Season: A letter to the future’ is,but it looks incredibly tranquil and seems to be focused primarily on exploring this eary village, recording sounds and talking to people in this strange (yet beautiful) corner of the world.

There’s still no confirmed release date outside of “Fall 2022”, but it certainly looks like the sort of game you’d want to hunker down with and play on a rainy day. One to watch for sure.

Final Fantasy XVI

Finally, we come to the end of the show which finishes with a bang as fans get a lengthy look at Final Fantasy 16.

A Sony blog post confirmed that the game is currently being polished right now, but is fully playable from start to finish. That’s going to be a lot of polish since right now the game has been given a Summer 2023 release date.

In previous interviews and updates, Final Fantasy XVI hadn’t really delved all that deep into the games main systems or combat, but the new trailer gives fans a fairly substantial look at what the gameplay will entail, especially the new action-packed battle system. Another cool thing to note, a lot of the development team appear to come from rather different backgrounds. The TLDR is various devs from the likes of Final Fantasy 14 Online, Final Fantasy Tactics, The Last Remnant, Devil May Cry 5 and more. It’s an eclectic mix, and as noted by Alex Donaldson from RPG Site, a refreshing change from the usual names we’ve seen in the past.
